  • Powergen's first gas-fired power station officially opened at Killingholme, on Humberside.

  • 60% of Powergen shares sold to public.

  • Powergen launched as a Public Limited Company owned by the government.
  • Divisionalisation of CEGB.

December

  • Powergen signs first deal in the liberalised Industrial and Commercial electricity market - with Toyota.

November

  • New generating company name announced - Powergen.

September

  • Weather sponsorship deal: Powergen is the first company to sponsor a TV programme in the UK - the ITV National Weather bulletins.

  • Announcement of privatisation of UK electricity industry.
