Ensure reliable energy

Why is it important?

planet_1_square

Over the next five years, a number of the UK's ageing power stations will close, leaving the country with a potential energy shortfall in the next decade.

But as we know, it's not just about keeping the lights on, that's just one of the three major challenges we face. We also need to keep energy affordable and reduce our carbon emissions too. So the decisions we take today are crucial, because they will affect future generations.

We're investing billions of pounds in developing a balanced portfolio of generation options because we believe this is the only way to solve the three huge challenges we face. Gas, clean coal and nuclear have their part to play alongside renewables. And we're upgrading our distribution networks at the same time. We want to reduce the number of power cuts and the amount of wastage as power travels from its source to our customers. We also want our network to be smart enough to cope with future generation options.
