Jonathan Berry

Tell us about your first placement at E.ON and which scheme you joined?

My first placement was as a design engineer within the Energy Services scheme. I was involved in constructing designs for anything from new factories to distributed generators. Looking at the technology behind the new smart meters was also part of my brief.

Tell us about Energy Services as a place to work.

Energy Services is a continually growing and energetic business area that I've found offers an engineer a good mix of technical, commercial and customer challenges. The people I work with are willing to give their time and share experiences with me, which is really important when you're new to a company.

What have you found most challenging and exciting?

Being part of the graduate scheme, by its very nature, means that I'm moving around and facing new situations and demands. My challenge is to quickly gain an understanding of my new roles within a business area so I can quickly become a proactive member of the team. I find this part of the job very exciting coupled with the fact that with every new placement I'm gaining a greater level of knowledge of the business.

What skills do you need to do your job well?

Well in addition to having a sound engineering background, good communication and time management skills are essential. I'm often involved in a number of projects which are running in parallel, all with their own deadlines. I'm also developing my skills to enable me to explain complex engineering requirements to someone who perhaps has very little knowledge of the subject in question.

How do you see your career developing?

I'm particularly interested in distribution generation and hope to gain experience in this area - I'm keen to get involved in designing connections for biomass generators. I also plan to work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, something that E.ON will support me with.
