Hydro
We have owned and operated Rheidol Power Station for over 40 years. It is the largest traditional hydro electric scheme in England and Wales.
Hydro-electric power stations use the energy in flowing water to produce electricity. Vast reservoirs of water are created by damming rivers, this water is then cascaded through turbines at speed to generate electricity.
Hydro schemes bring benefits to local communities by creating local employment opportunities and acting as a focal point for tourism and education.
Did you know...
- Hydro power is currently the largest source of renewable energy in the UK, Europe and worldwide.
- Using reservoirs as an energy store, large hydro schemes are able to produce electricity very rapidly when it is required, typically within minutes.
- The UK currently generates about 1.8% of its electricity from large-scale hydroelectric schemes.
- If hydro power from all of the streams and rivers in the UK could be tapped it would be enough to meet just over 3% of our total electricity needs.
