Kemsley 2 is a modern Fluidised Bed Combustion plant situated next to Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent.

Kemsley 2

The £17.5 million combustion plant is fuelled by around 180 thousand tonnes of paper waste by-products per annum, arising from the Kemsley and Sittingbourne Paper Mills and produces around 24MW of useful process steam. The facility, which is owned and operated by E.ON UK CHP, is fully integrated with the existing gas-fired combined heat and power plant which has been supplying the paper mills with electricity and steam since 1995.

The plant, which became operational in late 2002, provides the paper mills with a sustainable disposal facility for their waste. The mills had previously discarded their waste materials through a combination of land-spreading and land-filling. Therefore, this provides environmental benefits both in terms of reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and the transport movements associated with this activity. In addition, the ash produced by the plant is a useful by-product in the manufacture of concrete blocks which reduces the amount of lime required in the manufacturer's process.

Lurgi UK completed the construction of the plant in around 29 months. Operationally, the plant is staffed by a small team on a continuous 24-hour basis.
